The Sabfoil Wingfoil Racing World Cup & Open European Championships 2022 attracted 52 wingfoilers to the western shore of Lake Garda, in northern Italy, from October 19 to 22. This competition, entirely dedicated to racing, saw the runners compete over four days on varied slalom and long-distance courses. Here are the results!
Organized by Campione Univela, a sports center in the municipality of Campione on the western shore of Lake Garda, the Sabfoil Wingfoil Racing & Open European Championships attracted a fleet of riders from different backgrounds. From 18 years old Margherita Barro (ITA) to 45 years old Gunnar Biniasch (GER), without forgetting the champions and the favorites Paula Novotna (CZE), Orane Ceris (FRA), Mathis Guio (FRA), Clément Colmas (FRA) or also Francesco Cappuzzo (ITA), the competition gave us great battles on the water.
Although the WingFoil Open Racing Class depend on the IWSA (International Wing Sports Association), which has applied for World Sailing Class status, the wingfoil racing is not (yet?) subject to to gear gauges. The gear just have to follow some Class Ruleswhich probably include all existing wingfoil gear, because “Although written in closed class rules format, these class rules have only very few limitations to encourage development of equipment in this new discipline of sailing.”. Riders were therefore free to use the equipment of their choice.
With 10 races run over three days (one day not having enough wind), the riders were able to compete on long distance, slalom and upwind-downwind courses. If Paula Novotna quickly imposed herself at the top of the overall ranking, in the men’s category, the competition will have had suspense until the last heat with a fantastic comeback from Francesco Cappuzzo in first place. Read our summary of the competition (in French).
