Starboard introduces the Above, a mid-length foilboard designed to revolutionize light wind winging, which fits into the range between the Ace Foil and the Take-Off. Perfect for riders seeking early take-offs, smooth glides, and stability, the Above combines innovative design elements with Starboard’s expertise in crafting performance foilboards. And what’s more, it comes in an inflatable version: the Above AirFoil! We tell you all about this new range in this article.
A light wind board… designed for all conditions and all riders
The 2025 Above and Above Air ranges are designed for riders seeking versatile mid-size foilboards to elevate their performance. These boards are optimized for wingfoiling but also for SUP foiling and prone foiling. With its advanced features and thoughtful design, the Above delivers exceptional performance across a wide range of conditions. The additional volume in the nose and tail allows for an even stance over the foil before takeoff, while the combination of a longer and narrower outline easily generates speed for early lift-off. Features such as the pin tail design and parallel mid-section ensure speed before take-off, stable touchdowns, and balanced flight. From light winds to freeride adventures and long distances or even downwind runs, the Above promises that every session will be smooth and enjoyable.
The Above caters to a wide range of riders, from entry-level to advanced. Similar to riding a bike, the longer length and narrower width create stability by gaining momentum rather than simply trying to balance. As a result, there is rising demand for these “mid-length” style designs from riders of all horizons. More stable than an Ace, more efficient than a Take-Off, the Above is a harmonious blend of these two designs, offering an unmatched combination of ease and performance.
A Blend of Favorites
As Trevor Tunnington, Starboard’s R&D Manager, explained to us in one of our last articles: “After many days of light wind testing with the Ace Foil, we decided to blend together two of our favourite ranges and create our first mid-length range. The Above is a blend of the Ace Foil and Take Off models. We felt that beginner and intermediate riders needed a model that is fast in the take offs but slightly wider than a downwind foilboard, so the Above blends together many of our findings in the rest of the foilboard range in order to make a simple and easy-to-use board for everyone with fast take-off, easy touchdown, and balanced flight. The pin tail with the Ace design ensures great speed before take-off, while the Take-Off nose shape delivers stable performance and easy recovery.” The goal was to create an easy board for everyone: fast acceleration onto foil, balanced volume distribution, and versatility across a range of wind speeds.
Key Features
Shape Features
Vee-Shaped Nose: Inspired by the X-15 and Take Off ranges, the Vee-shaped nose minimizes drag for quicker take-offs and ensures a forgiving touchdown with instant rebound. Its wider shape offers enhanced control and stability.
Parallel Mid-Section: The straight mid-section ensures a balanced, predictable ride and improves tracking for a controlled glide into take-off.
Flat Deck: The flat deck maximizes usable space, providing comfort and control while maintaining responsiveness and balance.
Round Pin Tail: This design, adapted from the Ace, aids in effortless take-offs and ensures stability during flight. The slight Vee at the tail enhances speed and efficiency.
Boxy Rails: Boxy rails provide the stability of a wider board while maintaining a narrow overall width, improving efficiency and enabling faster take-offs.
Additional Volume in Nose and Tail: Extra volume in critical areas allows for an even stance over the foil before take-off, enhancing control and early lift-off capabilities.
Accessories Features
Foil Mounting System: Equipped with a reinforced long (14”) dual-rail box system for secure and precise foil attachment.
Footstrap Inserts: Strategically placed inserts allow for a variety of strap configurations to suit different riding styles.
Integrated Handle: Built-in handle for easy transport and convenience on and off the water (for largest Above models).
Nose Sticker: Protects your board from scratches and dings when placed on the ground.
